Be Kind To Your Wallet And The Environment This Christmas
You’ve spent all your spare money on gifts, but saving on waste is one way to be kind to your wallet over the festive season.
Leftovers are one of the best things about Christmas.
Let’s face it, you strive to create the family feast and then get to relax as you eat your way through it for the next couple of days.
How much of that delicious food do you end up tossing out at the end of the festive season, though?
As a nation, we waste so much food, but it doesn’t need to be that way. Here are a few ways to help avoid food waste.
- Count your guests and portion control accordingly;
- Plan your meals, using seasonal products where you can;
- Make a shopping list and stick to it;
- Store your leftovers and use them in other recipes - (frittata is a - great meal for leftovers);
- If you find you have bought too much fruit, freeze it for smoothies or baking;
- Freeze food and seafood scraps that might get smelly and put them out in the sulo bin on bin night; and
- If you live in a community where the green-lidded FOGO bin is used for food scraps, make sure you place your food scraps in that bin or in your compost bin or worm farm if you prefer.
There are ways to save on non-food items as well - reusing and recycling are at the top of the list.
- If you receive a new laptop or electronic device for Christmas, consider selling or donating the old one.
- Avoid using sing-use paper napkins, crockery and cutlery.
- Save gift bags and ribbons for next year.
- Recycle all paper and Christmas cards.
- Donate or sell your pre-loved clothes and other items.
- Put your beer bottle tops into a steel can, fold the lid down and recycle it all.
