While summer is the time to get out and enjoy the warmer weather, it comes with increased risk of fires, storms, floods and heatwaves. Now is the time to prepare so that in the event of those hazards, we can all respond quickly and efficiently.

We must understand the specific needs and risks for ourselves, our households and our community.

It’s also important to stay informed, take preventative measures where you can and plan the steps to take when an event occurs.

Here are some tips to help you be bushfire-aware:

  • Prepare your home by trimming any overhanging trees or branches, mowing any overgrown lawn and removing any leaves from gutters or around the house;
  • Understand your specific needs and risks during a bushfire and have a bushfire survival plan in place should you need to evacuate;
  • Get familiar with Fire Danger ratings to understand what actions to take when the danger of fire occurs or talk to your local NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) members about the likely risk of bush or grass fire in your local area; and
  • Protect your health this bushfire season - talk to your doctor about how bushfire smoke can affect your health, check your prescription and health action plans are up to date and know what to do if the air quality is impacted by bushfire smoke in your area.
