Last weekend proved that great things happen when the community pulls together. Griffith Presbyterian Church was moved to do something to help bring improvements to the mental health of the local community.

“We wondered what our church could offer the community to help,” Mrs Pfitzner, one of the event organisers, said.

“God cares about our mental health and our churches should care about our mental health.”

It would appear that she was right, because the church's car boot sale was a huge success.

“We didn’t have crowds of people, COVID probably had a lot to do with that, but we did have a steady flow of people coming through,” Mrs Pfitzner said.

The group managed to raise $1720 for The Way Back Support Service and Suicide Prevention through Wellways Griffith.

Mrs Pfitzner said that a social worker, and fellow Presbyterian Church parishioner, had recommended Wellways as a fitting recipient for the funds raised.

After doing her own research, she found that Wellways offered some very good practical support to those people struggling with mental health issues. The Way Back Support Service, delivered by Wellways in partnership with Beyond Blue, aims to provide practical support following a suicide attempt. It includes such things as helping link people and families to other support services.

For up to three months, the service can provide ongoing support, including helping a person remain connected to their support networks.
