Yenda Public School offered thanks to the community for assisting them with damage from the recent severe storm that ripped through the town last weekend.

Following a severe storm that swept through the village, wreaking havoc on Saturday, December 7, Yenda residents have pulled themselves up from the boot straps and come together to support one another.

With significant damage to property and the surrounding area, it was a challenging weekend for the small town.

Despite the destruction, residents were relieved there were no reports of life-threatening injuries.

The storm, which struck in the late afternoon left a trail of fallen trees, damaged structures and power outages.

It wasn’t enough to dampen the sense of community in Yenda, though.

In the face of adversity, the spirit of the Yenda community continued to shine brightly as neighbours rallied to support each other.

Emergency services, including the SES from Griffith, Sutton, Wollongong and Dapto, Police, Ambulance and Essential Energy crews worked tirelessly alongside Griffith City Council staff to address the immediate aftermath of the storm.

Their efforts included restoring power, clearing debris, tending to minor injuries, and ensuring the safety of all residents.

Council extended the Dump for Free period to include Monday, December 9 to Sunday, December 15 at Tharbogang Landfill and Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15 for Yenda Landfill.

Council also assisted in the collection of curbside storm debris and asked residents to move any storm debris to the front of their properties for collection.

Mayor Doug Curran commended the teamwork and resilience displayed by everyone involved.

“It’s heart-warming to see how the people of Yenda came together in such challenging circumstances,” Mayor Curran said.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all emergency services and Council staff who stepped up to ensure our community was safe and supported during the cleanup.”

As the recovery process continues, Yenda residents remain united, demonstrating the power of community in the face of nature’s challenges.
