Independent Member for Murray, Helen Dalton welcomed the Griffith Base Hospital redevelopment reaching an important milestone, but highlighted the need for further attention on the region’s health needs.

“Well done so far on the Griffith Hospital upgrade,” Ms Dalton said.

“This $250 million project has reached a milestone with the new three-storey clinical services building reaching its highest point.

“Although progress is fantastic, there is so much we need to do so we can improve the region’s health care.

“We are still in dire need of full-time, seven days a week orthopaedic surgeons, a mental health unit, a drug and alcohol detox unit and an endo fo life unit.

“So, yes, the new buildings and facilities are great, but we also need these additional assets and the trained staff to operate them and that remains a challenge which the Government knows it needs to address.”

While welcoming the milestone reached in construction of the main building, Ms Dalton said more buildings were needed.

“Accommodation for patients who live in remote areas and their families are needed, especially for those seeking life-saving cancer care,” she said.

“We also need to look at some of the existing building which could be repurposed for consulting rooms or indeed accommodation.”

Ms Dalton gave a heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Griffith Base Hospital for their ongoing important work.

“Without their hard work, we would not have a health care system,” Ms Dalton said.

“We know that and we value you.”

The construction workers on the hospital redevelopment were also acknowledged and thanked by Ms Dalton.

“They have done a great job,” she said.

“And that includes several women who have worked as project engineers, administrators, and design managers.

“I congratulate everyone who has worked on this major project and brought it so far towards being finished.”

Ms Dalton said the progress of the redevelopment showed that Griffith was well on the way to becoming a significant health precinct to cater for the region’s growing population.

“It’s been great to see real progress being made at the Griffith Base Hospital,” Ms Dalton said.

“The people of Murray have always deserved a first-class facility and this redevelopment will go some way to ensuring they get it.

“Minister Park ahs been very proactive and that’s incredibly encouraging for everyone in my electorate.”

With the hospital structural works completed, the project team will continue the internal fit-out, services installation and exterior works.

Health services are continuing to operate during construction, with the new hospital on track for completion in 2025.
