Independent Member for Murray, Helen Dalton assured voters in lead up to tomorrow’s election that she remained committed to sensible and legal gun ownership.
“Even though I left the SFF (Shooters, Fishers and Farmers) party last year, I still believe people have a right to use and own a gun, providing they are legally entitled to do so and follow the rules,” Mrs Dalton said.
Mrs Dalton said farmers needed to be able to humanely put down injured or sick livestock.
“It may not always be a feasible option to rely on a vet to euthanise livestock due to cost or geographical distance and it is imperative sick or injured livestock don’t suffer any longer than necessary,” she said.
“We also need farmers and hunters to be able to control exploding feral animal populations on their properties - if we relied on government programs, the country would be overwhelmed with rabbits, foxes and other feral animals.”
Mrs Dalton said as long as gun license holders are law-abiding citizens and compliant with all Australian laws and store their firearms correctly in a safe and locked space, there is no issue to be debated.
