Independent Member for Murray, Helen Dalton has welcomed a funding announcement for Grifith Base Hospital (GBH).

The Government has committed $274 million through the Essential Health Services Fund to boost staffing at new and upgraded hospitals across NSW as part of the 2024-25 NSW budget.

Ms Dalton said she was pleased that GBH had been identified as a hospital with a major lack of adequate staff, but towns like Leeton are still in desperate need of doctors at their financially neglected hospitals.

“I’m hoping this funding will guarantee the engagement of desperately needed additional healthcare workers and improved healthcare services in Griffith and across the state,” Ms Dalton said.

“We have long needed additional healthcare workers to meet the growing demands of our population, and this investment will significantly enhance our hospital’s capabilities.”

The funding will facilitate the deployment of healthcare workers to hospitals, including Griffith Base, ensuring these facilities are adequately staffed and able to provide the highest quality care to their communities.

Ms Dalton said it was essential to have the necessary state to run our hospitals effectively.

“For too long, our healthcare system has suffered from underinivestment, particularly in rural areas,” Ms Dalton said.

“This funding is a step in the right direction, but I will continue to advocate for more resources to support our healthcare workers and ensure that our hospitals can meet the needs of our communities.”

The addiitional healthcare workers funded by this investment will enable GBH to expand its range of services, reduce waiting times and provide better care for patients.

This includes support for emergency departments, intensive care units and broader hospital expansions, addressing the4 needs of a growing and ageing population.

Ms Dalton said she supported the efforts to address shortcomings in remote, rural and regional communities although the number of staff to be committed to GBH is still being committed.

She also called on the Government to provide funding for repurposing of the temporary surgical ward at the hospital rather than demolishing it once the hospital upgrade is complete.
