Residents took 1062 loads of trash to the Tharbogang Waste Management Centre at the recent Griffith City Council Dump for Free weekend.

More than 1,400 loads of rubbish were offloaded at the dump-for-free weekend at Griffith City Council landfill sites on March 18 and 19.

The free event proved hugely successful despite the heat, with 1062 loads of trash taken to the Tharbogang Waste Management Centre and 410 loads dumped at the Yenda Waste Management Centre.

Council’s Waste Operations Manager, John Roser said the Dump for Free program continued to be a success.

“We are really pleased with the response,” Mr Roser said.

“It shows that residents are keen to dispose of unwanted waste in the correct manner.

“We introduced this program back in 2012 and we are really happy that so many residents continue to participate.

“The weather was pretty hot over the weekend so I am surprised so many took advantage of the weekend.

“I think it just goes to show that there is a real need in the community for the Dump for Free weekends.”

The free weekends are held twice each year to help residents dispose of their bulky waste and to combat illegal dumping throughout the Local Government Area (LGA).

Residents were allowed two standard loads per household enabling them to dispose of bulky goods, green waste and general materials, without incurring the usual landfill fees.

Mayor Doug Curran urged people to remember to take advantage of the free Community Recycling Centre (CRC) located at the Tharbogang Waste Management Facility.

“The CRC is a permanent drop-off centre for common household problem wastes that can’t be collected via council kerbside waste and recycling collection services,” Mayor Curran said.

“Griffith and surrounding householders can drop off problem wastes at the Tharbogang Waste Management Facility all year round, free of charge - take advantage of this great service at any time and help your local environment.”
