1. Elegant wrapping paper can make a lovely Christmas table runner (think silver reindeers, or soft olive gum leaves) on top of a table cloth. The benefit of this approach is that wrapping paper is usually fairly wide so you can even get away without place mats, and you can throw it out at the end of the meal so you don’t have to worry about drips and spills.
2. Create centrepieces from trays. Narrow trays provide an ideal base to make an instant centrepiece. Think about covering your tray with silver wrapping paper, pine foliage, silver Christmas baubles, and a glass encased candle. Using ornaments with different shapes, textures and sizes makes the centrepiece a little more interesting.
3. Place thick Christmas ribbon in the middle of the table as a sparkly centrepiece.
4. Christmas tree ornaments make great Christmas plate decorations. On top of crisp white linen napery, add a sparkly bow or butterfly. Don’t worry about cutting the string off the ornament – it can be one of the gifts for those around your Christmas table.
5. Think laterally about Christmas lights. A string of Christmas lights not only looks good around the Christmas tree, but they can also look equally lovely around a mantlepiece or buffet, especially if mirrors are around to reflect the light.
6. Christmas wreaths also look good inside. Again, think about hanging a Christmas wreath about your mantlepiece or buffet.
Whatever you do though, we recommend that you chill out over Christmas. 2020 has been a particularly vexing year, and the most important thing is being together. Delegate Christmas decoration jobs and don’t be precious about the end result.
