Celebrating 32 years, Flickerfest returns to Griffith Regional Thursday tomorrow night, Saturday, March 11.
Flickerfest is Australia’s leading Academy® Qualifying and BAFTA Recognised short film festival and continues to present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world with hand-picked films.
This year’s films have been plucked from the festival’s record 3,200 entries.
The short films are entertaining, inspiring, award-winning and fresh from their premieres in competition at Flickerfest Bondi, giving Griffith Flickerfest audiences a window into the hottest contemporary shorts from at home and across the world today.
The Best of Australian Shorts programme shines a spotlight on the incredible short film talent that exists in our emerging Australian industry, with a host of Australian stories honouring our unique identity and culture.
Highlights include:
- The delightful, quirky comedy The Fritz, where a confused man, Trevor Jamieson (Storm Boy) is forced to confront his big family at an overwhelming birthday event after being hit by a meteor (also featuring a cheeky cameo from Kamahl).
- The colourful and insightful Torres Strait cultural drama Katele (Mudskipper), is about a woman longing for home. It won the Best Australian Short Film Award at Flickerfest 2023.
- Lean is a contemporary father/son drama starring Nicholas Hope (Bad Boy Bubby, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Scooby Doo, The Drover's Wife) and Harry Greenwood (The Nightingale, Hacksaw Ridge, Wakefield, Gallipoli), whose relationship becomes undone after the father’s political corruption threatens to drag them both under.
- Married at First Fleet delivers plenty of laughs as it follows a modern-day 18th century couple in the Australian colony who are matched according to common interests, attractiveness and lack of diseases.
Other highlights include the delightful comedy from Brisbane director, Lachlan Pendragon's An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It, which was recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Animation.
Griffith Regional Theatre Manager, Marg Andreazza, said Flickerfest was always a great night out and celebrated Australian stories and talent on the big screen.
“Come along and enjoy some incredible short films with a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink and a slice of pizza during the interval,” Mrs Andreazza said.
Flickerfest Best of Australian Shorts is screening at Griffith Regional Theatre on tomorrow night commencing at 7.30 pm.
The program contains mature themes, so children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.
