Why did you decide to run for Council?
To be honest, I was asked to consider it by somebody already on Council, and my first response was that I was too busy to fit it in!
But the more I thought about it and the things I could get involved with, the more excited I got about the possibilities of using my experience, skills, and abilities to contribute to this fine city that has been my home since 1992.
Tell us about Jenny Ellis.
I have been married to Tim for 30 years and have 2 adult children. I started my professional career here as a PE/Maths teacher and now am a wellness educator and coach. I focus on lifestyle choices that promote health and wellbeing concentrating on nutrition, movement, relationships, spirituality, positive psychology, and resource management.
I also provide Float Therapy at our Made To Thrive business. I am very community-minded and have been involved in leading teams for various projects and events since I was 16 years old.
Whether it be as a student, teacher, coach, performer, choreographer, director, manager, or speaker I have worn many hats through the years.
I have been involved in education, small business, sport, health, social justice, the arts, music, and churches. I am comfortable with one on one interactions, small groups, and large audiences. The guiding principles in my life have been creativity, excellence, and integrity. These would be the foundation of everything I do.
How do you see yourself contributing to Council?
I am both a visionary and a small detail person. Both are needed in leadership. As mentioned I have the experience of working with others from different backgrounds and abilities towards a common goal. I believe my experience and skills will be an asset in moving Council forward.
What Changes would you like to see in Council and the Community?
I think like most people in Griffith I would like to see Lake Wyangan returned to a vibrant community space. My family has grown up at the lake. It is my favourite place in Griffith and it breaks my heart to see it not being used to its full potential.
I also know it is a very complicated issue that involves many players, but this is the sort of challenge that I am up for. As a small business owner who has tried to attract professional staff here over the last 21 years, I am passionate about creating a community that not only embraces growth and makes it easier to obtain housing, etc. But also has the lifestyle and services that keep people here. Housing is a huge issue. If elected the first thing that I will be doing is getting a good overall perspective of the strengths and weaknesses of our current policies and where the most urgent issues are.
Why should we vote for you?
When looking for a good Councillor you want someone who is both caring about the people and issues in the community but also strong enough to help lead change. I believe I am that person.
