Residents of Griffith were invited to celebrate Local Government Week with a range of planned activities that showcased the ways Council leads the community.

This year’s theme, ‘Locally Led’ offered a chance to reflect on the major role Council plays in improving Griffith as a place to live, work and visit.

They kicked off the week with a guided cultural walk from the Griffith Visitors Centre through the Banna Lane murals and Centenary sculptures, complete with knowledgeable commentary provided by Art Gallery staff and Visitors Centre volunteer Allan Haggarty. The tour finished with a viewing of the city’s unique theatre curtain and morning tea at Griffith Regional Theatre.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi said the week’s events were an opportunity for residents to get to know Council staff a little better and to learn more about Council.

“Many people know that Council is responsible for local roads, rates and rubbish, but are less aware of the many other services we provide,” Cr Dal Broi said.

“We operate a free local library, provide spaces for community groups, administer grants, maintain playgrounds and sporting fields, and a whole lot more. I invite residents to get involved in the activities we have planned throughout the week.” Around 30 new residents were welcomed to Griffith in a citizenship ceremony yesterday in the Burley Griffin Room of the Griffith Regional Theatre.

Griffith City Library marked the week with a number of events of interest, including the interactive display Drug and Alcohol Information Hub, which provided access to quality information outlining different drugs and the effects they have on the body. The pop-up Census Hub will continue through to tomorrow, with staff on hand to render face-to-face assistance to residents filling out their Census forms. Translating and interpreting services are available.
