Residents are urged to take advantage of a month-long dump-for-free event to spring clean their homes and gardens.

Stop putting that spring clean off, Griffith City Council has expanded its dump-for-free weekend to a month-long special.

The dump-for-free weekends have become very popular, with many residents taking up the opportunity to declutter their home, shed and garden without worrying about the costs associated with disposing of unwanted waste.

Dump-for-free month will commence on Saturday, September 30 and continue until Sunday, October 29. Griffith Mayor, Doug Curran said dump-for-free month would give residents greater flexibility as well as cost savings for Council.

“The weekends have always been a massive success, with close to 1200 residents using the Tharbogang and Yenda service over one weekend this time last year,” Mayor Curran said.

“Instead of having everyone head out all at once, we hope that people will take advantage of the free entry at the Tharbogang and Yenda facilities throughout the month.

“The dates we’ve chosen allow five weekends and four full weeks for the event.

“We have been looking for ways to improve this free service whilst also being very mindful of costs, especially when we are talking to the community about a Special Rate Variation (SRV).

“This change reduces costs whilst offering a more flexible service, it’s a true win-win outcome, I feel.

“We will see how this goes and what feedback we receive.”

Council’s Waste Operations Manager, John Roser said that general domestic waste, including garden debris and mixed recyclables, is eligible for disposal.

“Each household can dispose of up to two standard loads, with a maximum of four car tyres per load,” Mr Roser said.

“Commercial or agricultural tyres will not be accepted.

“A standard load is equivalent to a car and trailer combination or a single car or ute load.

“It is important to note that asbestos and other hazardous waste will not be accepted during this period.”

Residents are encouraged to use the free Community Recycling Centre (CRC) situated at the TharbogangWaste Management Facility, as well.

The CRC serves as a permanent drop-off location for common household problem wastes that cannot be collected through Council kerbside waste and recycling collection services.

Accepted items at the CRC include paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor oils, other oils, car and household batteries, smoke detectors and fluorescent globes and tubes.

The Tharbogang Waste Management Centre will be open from 8 am to 5 pm, seven days a week throughout the dump-for-free month. The Yenda Centre will be open from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sundays.
