Griffith Croquet Club Hosts Coach Session Next Week

Griffith Croquet Club Inc will host the Chair of Croquet NSW, Kate McLoughlin, and NSW Golf Croquet Referee, Peter Freer, who will travel from Canberra to coach the local members on Wednesday, April 26.

McLoughlin and Freer will cover drills and exercises, strategies for play, tips on ways to hold a mallet, hoop running, stops shots, etc.

Griffith Croquet Club held its Charter Meeting at Griffith Community Centre, Olympic Street, on November 17 last year.

The game has been played in Griffith for several years on various patches of lawn, however and there is plenty of room for both social and competitive play.

The current group has 15 playing members and four social members. Membership is open to young and old and anwyere in between.

A game can last from between 30 to 60 minutes.

The group usually plays two games before enjoying a cuppa together before playing a third game.

They currently play on the lawn adjacent to the Visitors Centre on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday commencing at 9:30 am.

The times do change with the season, with the Griffith Croquet Club playing in the early afternoon in winter and the early morning during summer.

Golf Croquet is the fastest growing version of the sport of Croquet, due maintly to its simplicity to learn and play.

There is, however, a certain amount of strategic skill required to be successful.

The benefits of playing croquet include exercise, mental stimulation, competition and companionship.

Croquet is keenly contested in tournaments at club, state, national and international levels and provides an opportunity travel and meet new friends.

Griffith members will travel to Wagga next month to play in a social tournament with other clubs coming from Albury, Wodonga and Young.

The club is also working on new croquet fields at Henderson Oval, Yoogali where they have space for three croquet lawns.

A croquet team consists of four players and with three fields they can field 12 players without having to double or triple bunk teams we they do now.

Interested or curious players are welcome to go along and try a game before joining up.

The club will supply a mallet and guide new players through the game.
