Griffith Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) has invited expressions of interest from people interested in joining in 2024.

Last year was the first following the COVID-19 pandemic where LHACs in the Murrumbidgee region were able to operate free from the restrictions of the pandemic.

Griffith LHAC has always punched above its weight with numerous projects and advocacy initiatives on the go and it plans to be no different this year.

In 2023, Griffith LHAC members identified several key priority areas which they worked steadily on throughout the year, including:

  • Health Literacy - improving the health literacy of the overall population (particularly vulnerable groups);
  • Cancer screening - increasing rates of screening;
  • Mental health - advocating for access to services and promotion of services; and
  • Children’s services (Allied Health) - improving access and awareness.

Griffith LHAC’s key achievements include publishing monthly articles in the local newspaper and hosting a Dying to Know Day event to inform the community and promote access to services.

Griffith LHAC Chair Margaret King said the role of the group’s members as advocates was to understand the needs of the local community, identify gaps and advocate for improved communication and access.

“All LHAC members share a combined interest in focussing on what matters most to our community,” Ms King said.

“They volunteer to be on the committee and engage closely with hospital staff from the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) and also with the team at the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) to review local data and provide feedback and ideas about health services.

“We are currently recruiting for new members, particularly those from our First Nations and multicultural communities.”

Applications are now open for new members.
