A small band of local women decided to do their bit to help small local businesses through the lockdown through Facebook.

One of the moderators of Griffith Lockdown Fun, Nicole Ruberto said that the inspiration came from a Hay page she’d seen that had been organised to help small businesses.

“It works as individual raffles, with small business owners putting up an item and selling tickets to cover the normal retail cost of the item,” Ms Ruberto said.

Business owners would post an item for buyers to bid on, selling a specific number of tickets up to the value of the product. For example, if they were offering a vase that usually retailed for $200, they might sell 20 tickets at $10 a pop, giving 20 people the opportunity to win ownership of the vase.

“Our aim is to put as much money back into shopping locally during the lockdown as possible,” Ms Ruberto said.

Winners were drawn and announced only after all tickets for each product was sold.

The group was enthusiastically welcomed by both vendors and buyers and they managed to put a total of $185,022.64 back into the local economy.
