Griffith surgeon Dr Jayachandra Narayan has been awarded the 2024 Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Outstanding Service to the Community Award.
The general surgeon, known fondly as Dr Jaya, received the award in recognition for his dedication to the Griffith community.
Director of Medical Services at Griffith Base Hospital Dr Sunil Adusumilli said Dr Jaya’s commitment to rural health care has been “nothing short of extraordinary”.
“Dr Jaya has provided consistent, high-quality care, ensuring that Griffith’s residents receive the same standard of care as those in metropolitan centres,” Dr Adusumilli said.
“Dr Jaya’s clinical skills and medical knowledge are second to none.
“His tenure includes serving as a former Director of Surgery, when he spearheaded numerous initiatives to enhance the quality of care provided to patients.
“He is also a dedicated supervisor to junior medical staff, nurturing the next generation of professionals with his extensive knowledge, experience and guidance.
“Above all, Dr Jaya is a staunch advocate for patients, always placing their needs at the forefront of this practice to ensure they receive comprehensive, compassionate and dignified care.”
Dr Jay said he was both surprised and humbled by the award.
“I am delighted to be a part of the Griffith community and to be able to ensure residents in this regional and rural community are able to access high-quality healthcare,” Dr Jaya said.
“We have a wonderful team at Griffith Base Hospital, who are also committed to caring for the community.”
