Grandmother Beryl Paul is one of two finalists in this year’s Fred Awards run by the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Griffith grandmother Beryl Paul, who has spent more than three decades knitting to raise funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation has been named a finalist in this year’s Fred Awards run by the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Shortlisted from over 30 nominations, Ms Paul is one of just two finalists in the 2024 Fred Awards.

The winner will be determined by a public vote and named as 2024 Fred Hollows Humanitarian of the Year.

Her support for the NGO (non-government organisation) began after a chance meeting with Fred Hollows.

“I remember he (Fred) told me, “Doing nothing is not an option”,” Ms Paul said.

Since then, she has spent countless hours knitting and crocheting everything from tea cosies to baby clothes, blankets and tea towels, which she sells at local fetes and markets.

Over the years, the 81-year-old has raised more than $26,000.

Ms Paul is a member of the Griffith Natty Knitters, a group of grandmothers who have been knitting together to raise money for charities at Griffith City Library every Saturday since 2007.

Judy Best, who nominated Ms Paul for the award said her friend was a tireless, inspiring advocate who wholeheartedly supported the sight-restoring work that The Fred Hollows Foundation provides.

“I consider Beryl’s dedication to be worthy of recognition as an outstanding achievement, her continuous contribution is amazing,” Ms Best said.

Launched in 2021, the Fred Awards recognise everyday humanitarianism in Australia and celebrate people who care for others in a decent, practical and no-nonsense way - like Fred did.

Members of the community are encouraged to vote for the Humanitarian of the Year at www.hollows.org.au/fredawards-vote before Monday, October 21.

Foundation ambassador, comedian and author, Adam Spencer will host the awards ceremony at The University of Sydney on Monday, November 11, where nominees will be recognised and the Humanitarian of the Year revealed.
