Griffith’s Dance Students Get A Taste Of Creating A Professional Show
The NXTGen Program’s BJ Rorke addresses dance students at one of his workshops.
The NXTGen Program returns to Griffith during the school holidays for another week-long workshop aimed at improving technique and confidence as well as giving them an up-close experience of what it takes to be a professional dancer.
“It is a week long program of dance classes that culminates in an hour long performance at the theatre,” Ms Brown said.
The NXTGen Program is actually a training program created by BJ Rorke and his wife Aeysha almost six years ago.
“It’s a six-day program, with three different choreographies,” Mr Rorke said.
“The kids get an audition experience and we create a concept video.
“It’s really about learning all those aspects of creating a show and working in the industry.
“They spend a lot more time in the studio than they do on stage.”
At the beginning, they toured the team around sharing their skills with young up-and-coming dancers and after hearing feedback from them about what they’d learned, creating a professional show.
They started the program for kids looking at dance as a career, but now include kids that just want to improve where they are at right now, to grow their confidence, learn the art of storytelling and building their skills and abilities.
The NXTGen Project brings basic costumes for use in the resulting show.
