International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificates

The world seems a very different place since the pandemic hit us. We now have to provide evidence of full vaccination against COVID-19 to enjoy the freedoms we once took for granted.

The three available document or certificate-types are:

  • The International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate.
  • The COVID-19 Digital Certificate.
  • The immunisation history statement.

Each of these documents serves a different purpose.

  • Globetrotters will need an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate for their international travel. The QR code included with the certificate complies with the international travel standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation and can be read globally.
  • The COVID-19 Digital Certificate is not recognised globally but may be required to travel domestically and enter some local venues.
  • If you have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the immunisation history statement can also be used to verify that fact. This statement will show all of the immunisations you have received, though.

All three of these documents can be downloaded through your myGov account. People eligible for Medicare can also download their certificate through their Medicare online account.

International travellers also need to have an Australian passport or visa and have their immunisation recorded in the Australian Immunisation Register (this is usually done automatically by the service that provided the immunisation). Passport details need to be provided, after which you will receive proof of vaccination, complete with your unique QR code that can be scanned upon entry to your international destination.

International travel is set to resume on November 1, 2021.The list of countries Australian travellers will be able to visit continues to grow daily, but restrictions are in place in most countries. Rules around proof of vaccination may differ from country to country, even though the certificate meets international standards. You may need to provide both the vaccine certificate and a negative COVID-19 test prior to departing for or upon arrival at your destination.

Check out smartraveller.gov.au for more information about what is required by the country you wish to visit before jetting off.
