Jerilderie FNC Welcomes Origin Australian Diamond Jo Weston Last Weekend
Origin Australian Diamonds star Jo Weston shared some tips with the players of Jerilderie Football Netball Club before lending a hand at the official opening of the new netball change rooms at Monash Park.
The Jerilderie Football Netball Club (FNC) hosted Origin Australian Diamonds star Jo Weston on Saturday, November 23 as part of Origin’s Diamond For A Day program.
Weston joined in a clinic and Q&A session with the young players before helping to officially open Monash Park’s new netball changerooms, with Jerilderie FNC President Carson Thomas and Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae OAM.
The experienced defender, who has 75 Test caps for Australia, was impressed by the passion and talent on show from Jerilderie’s juniors.
“It’s been really great being out in this area and being able to spread the Diamonds love far and wide,” Weston said.
“We all know how important sport is in regional communities.
“I was so impressed there was so much natural athletic ability out here but also a lot of finesse in some of their attacking skills out on the court.
“I shared a few tricks of the trade when it comes to being a bit of a mongrel on the defensive end.”
Jerilderie FNC’s Eden Hercus said the players had been so excited about Weston’s visit.
“They’ve been looking forward to this for weeks; since they learned she was coming,” Hercus said.
Young U13s player Lexie Bryce said she thought the day was really fun.
“Jo was super nice and we did some training and stuff,” Bryce said.
“She’s very tall compared to some of the people I know.”
Bryce said she was very happy that their change room was larger than the visitors’ changeroom in the new facility.
U17s player Miley Conn enjoyed the visit.
“She met us all and she did some drills,” Conn said.
“They were very helpful.
“She did a little Q&A with us.
“I asked her if she would follow me back on Instagram.
“She said she would.
“I asked how she became a Goal Defence and why she didn’t try for some of the other positions.
“She said she was naturally drawn to it and everyone put her in that position because she was so tall.”
Origin’s Diamond For A Day program was designed to help bring good energy to local netball clubs and communities, with visits from past and present Diamonds players.
