There were a few rumpled feathers Friday of last week when staff and students of Kalinda School discovered that their prized chickens had been stolen, along with their water bowl.

They posted on their Facebook page and received a few offers of replacement chickens, proving that there are still good eggs in the community willing to lend a helping hand and put smiles on the faces of children.

A spokesperson for NSW Education said the NSW Department of Education could confirm five chickens were stolen from Kalinda School last Thursday night.

“The chickens are highly valued by staff and students at the school,” the spokesperson said.

“Their eggs have been used as part of the cooking and gardening program. Each class at Kalinda School was responsible for the naming of Red, Black Betty, Apricot, The Colonel and Hedwig and they took turns in caring for the chickens’ daily needs.”

“Three chickens have since been found by members of the public and returned to the school. Hedwig and The Colonel are sadly still missing. Students were, understandably, upset to learn the animals had been taken.”

NSW Police are investigating and anyone with information is urged to contact local police.
