Kelly To Ride For Cervical Cancer

Do It For Cancer

Like the rest of us, Whitton resident Kelly Parr was just getting on with her own life when she started to feel unwell.

“I didn’t feel well, I was tired all the time,” she said.

After feeling unwell for a few months, she thought she should get herself to a doctor to see what the problem was.

There were some timing issues at the beginning, with her dad getting sick and having to be hospitalised, but once she was able to get to Sydney for the necessary tests she was back within a week for surgery.

The news that she had cervical cancer was the kind of shock you can definitely do without, and since then it has been a rollercoaster of emotions.

“The only thing that kept me going was my kids, my grandkids and my newest grandkid,” Ms Parr said.

“I wouldn’t have been able to cope without my partner.”

“I wouldn’t have been able to cope at all with the surgery without him. It was a very painful procedure.”

“I told the doctor to give my childbirth any day. It feels like someone put a brick wall up in front of us and we just keep knocking it down, but every time we knock it down they put another brick up.”

Ms Parr is determined to fight, even though she acknowledges that some days are harder than others.

“You either want to be here or you don’t,” she said.

“My kids keep encouraging me, they keep saying, ‘You’ve got this, Mum’. Some days I cry all day, but now that I can drive again after the surgery, I take myself out for a drive.”

Her son gets involved with regular motorbike rides for charity and he suggested that they organise a bike ride for her, to raise money for cervical cancer.

So, they are in the process of organising a bike ride to take place in February 2022.

“I’m determined to ride my bike myself, no matter what,” Ms Parr said.

“I don’t want to sit in someone’s ute, driving along.”

Already, sponsors have jumped on board, along with some smaller businesses, donating raffle prizes. If you would like to donate towards research into cervical cancer, you can do so by clicking the teal ribbon link on Kelly Parr’s facebook page - DOITFORCANCER.COM.AU.
