The Blue Green Algae (BGA) alert level at Lake Wyangan has changed to amber, but some restrictions remain in place.
Griffith City Council’s Principal Officer, Environment, Raju Maddi said lake users were urged to enter and exit the lake from the western shore as areas close to Jones Road remained at red alert level.
“Testing is carried out across several areas of Lake Wyangan, with the western shore and middle of the lake now at amber,” Mr Maddi said.
“However, areas closer to Jones Road are still returning high levels and remains on red alert - please do not enter or exit the lake from this location.”
Griffith mayor, Doug Curran said he welcomed the news of the reduction in BGA at Lake Wyangan and encouraged users to avoid the areas near Jones Road.
“Please adhere to Council warnings and remain on the western shore and centre of the lake,” Mayor Curran said.
“Council is fully committed to finding a long-term, sustainable solution to the many issues affecting Lake Wyangan and this is a really good start.”
Sampling for algae will be undertaken twice a week, and the community updated if it drops back to red alert levels.
At amber alert levels, BGA is present in the water at low densities, possibly signalling the early stages of the development of a bloom, or a period where a bloom is declining.
At such densities, the BGA does not pose a threat to recreational, stock or domestic use.
