The Leeton Midwifery Group Practice (LMGP) celebrates seven years of providing support to women throughout their pregnancy, birth and post-natal period.

The team is passionate about giving birthing mothers the support and care they need in their own community, without the need to travel.

LMGP midwives collaborate with GPs, obstetricians and paediatricians to provide health assessment and care throughout the antenatal, birth and postnatal experience of the women and their families.

Midwives provide education, information and support including exercise and nutrition, strategies to enhance the birthing experience and breastfeeding support.

Leeton Health Service Facility Manager Amy Thorn said she was proud that her facility was home to the service.

“We currently have three midwives on the team and we’re very excited because we have just recruited two additional midwives,” Ms Thorn said.

LMGP midwife Leeanne Nichol is delighted to be celebrating the milestone with her colleagues.

“This model of care is not just about birth, but the entire journey leading up to and afterwards and we are so proud to be able to offer the program to our community,” Ms Nichol said.

“We are so proud of the woman-centred care we are providing to the community right here in Leeton.”

Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s Midwifery Manager Sandra Forde, who was awarded this year’s MLHD Don Kendell Leadership Award winner, said the LMGP provides woman-centred care in the Leeton community.

Ms Ford, who was appointed to her role in 2014, has been a driving force behind the development of midwifery models of care integral to the implementation of the LMGP.

“It’s important we’re providing care that meets the needs of women,” Ms Forde said.

“At the LMGP, women have the opportunity to develop a long-lasting relationship with their midwives throughout their pregnancy, birth and early days with their newborn.

“I am very proud of the team at Leeton, who are committed to providing the best possible care to women and their families during a special time in their lives.”
