3-Bin-Murrumbidgee

Murrumbidgee Council’s new and improved three-bin kerbside service rolled out across the Council area from Monday, July 3.

Murrumbidgee Council Mayor, Ruth McRae said the new service comprised three separate bins for Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO), recycling and garbage.

As a general guide, residents are advised to place food, garden organics and fibre-based kitchen caddy liners that have been distributed to everyone, only in the FOGO bin.

Aluminium trays, cans and foil (scrunched up to the size of an orange), glass bottles and jars, all paper, cardboard, newspaper, magazines and advertising brochures (not shredded), rigid plastics (with recycling symbol 1, 2 or 5) and steel cans and containers, including aerosols, can be placed in the yellow-lidded recycling bin.

Mayor McRae said the next few weeks would be a learning curve for everyone as we work to sort correctly and make sure we keep contamination to a minimum.

“Unfortunately, if items are contaminated, we incur extra sorting and handling fees, which ultimately we all pay for, Mayor McRae said.

“We’re asking everyone to put items in the red-lid garbage bin if they’re unsure at this stage or ring us at Council for clarification.

“Businesses also have three kerbside bins as part of the new system. Business operators are able to change the configuration of each bin type to suit their business operations,” Cr McRae said.

Mayor McRae said, as part of the new service, the organics bin (with the bright green lid) would be collected every Monday across all towns.

The other two bins will be collected fortnightly on alternating weeks.
