Needed - Enthusiastic Volunteers For The LHAC

Local Health Advisory Committees (LHAC) are voices between community and health providers throughout the Murrumbidgee region, bringing ideas forward and advocating for local community needs.

Last year, the Regional Health Division of NSW Health released the “Strengthening Local Health Committees” report around the role local health committees played in engaging the community.

That report provided guidance to strengthen local health committees in regional NSW.

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) together with Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) have worked with LHACs to evolve their role and provide support to strengthen and empower LHACs to become engaged and powerful leaders in health advocacy.

MLHD’s Community Engagement Manager, Setchen Brimson said previous health knowledge or experience was not a requirement for joining the LHAC.

“Our LHAC members come from all walks of life and are united in their desire to improve health outcomes for local people,” Ms Brimson said. “Many of our LHAC members have been involved in fantastic projects, initiatives and ideas that have resulted in positive outcomes for their community.

“The key to being a good advocate is the ability to have your finger on the pulse of your local community and the ability to speak up and represent these community needs and concerns when you’re at the discussion table.”

To become a member of your local LHAC you will need to complete an application form and have the required screening processes necessary for the particular activity or group you would like to participate in.
