Griffith’s Pukapukan community have brought back community sport.

Member of the Pukapukan community, Lome Tengere said that it was important not to lose a sense of family and community following last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns.

“We used to do a lot of community sporting events through the year,” Ms Tengere said.

“Earlier in the year, we played a game of Australian touch, volleyball, and kids games as well.

“Community sport is something we brought with us from the Cook Islands.

“They have two teams and those two teams challenge each other throughout the year.”

On Easter Monday the local Pukapukan community’s two teams engaged in a little friendly cricket competition at Jubilee Oval. Families were there to cheer the teams on and simply enjoy spending time together.

The family atmosphere was alive with sporting action, laughter, cultural music and togetherness.
