One of Australia's most prolific and well known authors, Wiradjuri woman Anita Heiss, is launching her latest novel Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (River of Dreams) at Griffith City Library next Thursday.
This event is dedicated to the late Roger Penrith.
The historical fiction is a tale of love, loss and belonging.
A pair of Wiradjuri men, Yarri and Jacky Jacky, saved more than 60 townsfolk from the seething river during the Gundagai floods in 1852. Yarri spent three days and nights ferrying survivors to safety in his bark canoe, one by one.
“It’s a story of heroism, but it’s also a story of homecomings. I think it’s a story for all Australians. But I do hope the people of Griffith, who also live on Wiradjuri country, feel something in their hearts when they read the story,” Ms Heiss said.
Anita is in Griffith next week, conducting author talks with school students. While here, she is launching this latest novel, set in Wiradjuri country, weaving in Wiradjuri language throughout.
Special guests on the night include Madison and Lisa Penrith, Maydina Penrith, Yaltara Penrith, Richard Penrith and Letetia Harris.
“The launch of the novel in Griffith allows me to involve my family there. The Penrith’s have always been incredible supporters and avid readers.”
“[Roger Penrith]
was much loved across the Wiradjuri country and a hero to many also... his loss was felt not only through the state of New South Wales, but people would have known him across the country. It was a tragic loss for his family, and all the lives he touched in the community too.”
Tickets are available for the launch on Thursday June 24 from 6pm via Eventbrite or contacting the library on 6962 8300.
