New Technology To Help With Diagnosis

The Griffith Breast Cancer Support Group (GBCSG) is supporting cancer patients and further, with the purchase of a lymph scanner for Griffith Base Hospital’s lymphoedema outpatient clinic.
Lymphoedema can be a common part of the cancer journey. It can occur following breast or other cancer treatment where lymph nodes have been removed or damaged.
Changes to the lymphatic system causes lymph fluid to build up in tissue under the skin.
Griffith Breast Cancer Support Group President Marija McLean says they purchased the $7,470 machine to help the community.
The lymph scanner is a portable measuring device that can detect the water content in tissue, making it very useful in the detection, monitoring and treatment of lymphoedema.
“The procedure through to diagnosis and treatment can take a while. The lymph scanner makes it almost instantaneous,” said Mrs McLean.
Mrs McLean said the support group decided to fund the machine to speed up treatment for not only breast cancer patients.
“The Lymphoedema Clinic is only open one way per week. We hope to speed up the diagnosis with the lymph scanner.”
Griffith Base Hospital Lymphoedema Therapist, Kim Jones the scanner is ideal for her clinic clients, given its ability to identify and isolate where on their body to work on.
“To this day, I continue to appreciate and use on a daily basis the low-level laser therapy unit and LX9 compression pump that was so graciously purchased by the GBCSG for the commencement of the clinic back in 2017,” said Ms Jones.
“Yet another show of support has seen the purchase of new technology for the clinic this month.”
The hospital runs the clinic runs every Friday, as part of the specialist clinic services offered.
