The Murrumbidgee Short Story Competition, now in its third year, is currently accepting short stories until midnight Sunday, October 8.
This competition has steadily grown since its inception, giving local writers a platform to get their work out.
It is a partnership between Griffith and Regional Association of Performing Arts, Leeton Art Society, Narrandera Arts and Creative Network and MONA Magazine, with cash prizes to be won and no entry fee.
The rules are simple:
- Wordsmiths must reside in one of the four Western Riverina Arts membership Local Government Areas (LGA) - Griffith, Murrumbidgee, Leeton or Narrandera;
- Each writer can enter a maximum of two pieces;
- The story must an original work not previously published anywhere, including blogs, websites, magazines and books;
- It must be the first time the story has been submitted for this competition.
All entries must be formatted in Times New Roman, double spaced and emailed to comms@westrivarts.com.au.
Each entry must include the author’s name, age, phone number, postcode and the category it is being submitted for.
- Open - 1,000 to 3,000 words ($350 cash prize);
- Open Runner up - 1,000 to 3,000 words ($200 cash prize);
- Under 18 - 2,000 words ($200 cash prize); and
- Under 12 - 250 words ($75 cash prize).
Winners will be announced in November after submissions have undergone a blind judging process with the panel.
Winning entries will be featured in upcoming Western Riverina Arts newsletters and published on the website.
First-place getters and highly commended writers will receive digital certificates.
