Seniors within the Murrumbidgee Local Health District are urged to continue being active, having fun and connecting with others.

NSW Seniors Festival is wrapping up, but that doesn’t mean that our seniors need to hang up their activewear and enthusiasm.

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) has encouraged quite the opposite, calling for the community to stay active.

MLHD Health Promotion Officer, Megan Mattingly said there was a range of physical activity classes for seniors that were affordable, safe and fun available all year round.

“Gentle exercise classes are ideal for people have always thought about getting active, and they’re run in a very friendly environment,” Ms Mattingly said.

“We know the importance of regular physical activities to maintain good health and this is a great opportunity for community members to participate in a low-cost and fun exercise program offered locally.

Research has shown that exercise has benefits for all ages, such as supporting improved strength and balance, which can help to reduce a person’s risk of falling.

“The classes include gentle exercise, Tai Chi and aqua exercise, and are run by trained local volunteers in a friendly and social setting,” Ms Mattingly said.

“There are currently 80 classes running each week across the district, so there are plenty of opportunities for the community to be involved.”

MLHD is currently looking to expand their network of gentle exercise classes in the community by recruiting and training new volunteer leaders.

If you or someone you know has an interest in helping older adults, enjoys being physically active and has time to volunteer, please call Adelle on 0409 781 326.

Volunteer training will be held in Wagga on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1 and spaces are limited.

Visit www.activeandhealthy.nsw.gov.au for nmore information about any physical activity classes provided by MLHD.
