PCYC’s new manager Alana Dunn, along with her team, has organised a fun-filled, fast-paced school holiday break Sports Camp that will take place on Thursday, April 21 from 4 pm to 8:30 pm.
“We want to give the young people something to look forward to,” Ms Dunn said.
“The cities get a lot and we don’t.”
Ms Dunn is looking forward to developing the club’s community involvement and youth engagement over the coming months.
A bus has been organised to bring young people from Leeton to enjoy the vacation event as well, but they must have parental permission.
Registration for the event can be on the day as usual, but they are encouraging pre-registration this time so that they can make sure they have enough food and are adequately staffed.
The vacation program is completely free of charge and includes everything from basketball to arts and crafts.
Ms Dunn was attracted to PCYC in particular because of the ability to give back.
“I’ve come from a retail background with Flight Centre,” Ms Dunn said.
“I was looking for a change, something community based where I could make a difference.”
With teenage daughters of their own, Ms Dunn and her husband made the move to Griffith from Goulburn five years ago.
As a not-for-profit organisation, PCYC does encourage membership where possible to enable them to continue to operate programs for the community’s young people.
The young people accessing the club’s services come from all walks of life, so the team does their best to ensure that programs are diverse to meet the different needs represented within the community.
One program that seems to be doing well is the drop-in centre on Fridays.
Ms Dunn said she had only attended one of the drop-in sessions so far, but she had enjoyed it.
“It’s all about youth engagement,” Ms Dunn said.
“Similar kids drop in each week.
“We get in food and play pool. “Last week we had a big projector, ate hot dogs and watched the footy together.”
The club also has new Xboxes and TV screens.
PCYC will definitely be a local organisation to watch in the coming months.
