Point’s Shire Hall Celebrated In Roaring 20s Style
Three generations of Darlington Point residents, Sue Mitchell, Maggie Burns and Annie Mitchell celebrate the Shire Hall Centenary.
Saturday night saw a flashback to the Roaring 20s in Darlington Point as they celebrated the Shire Hall’s centenary and reopening following refurbishment.
A classic Riley Motor Car parked at the entrance greeted guests, many dressed in typical 1920s flapper fashion.
As part of the celebration, a ceremony was held to mark the centenary and refurbishment of the town’s Shire Hall, made possible with $400,000 from the NSW Government.
Murrumbidgee Council Mayor, Ruth McRae said was tremendous that the hall was now restored to its former glory and could now be used for its original purpose - to host community and family gatherings and events.
Mayor McRae said it truly was a beautiful hall and Council was very pleased that the community would have access to it again.
“It now has a fully-fitted out commercial kitchen and catering supplies, which can be utilised by the community,” Mayor McRae said.
Murrumbidgee Council provided seed funding to the Darlington Point Public School P&C and Heritage Darlington Point to coordinate the event and raise funds.
Darlington Point Public School P&C President, Annie Mitchell said the P&C was extremely happy with the turnout and looked forward to many other activities and celebrations in the Hall.
Coinciding with Saturday night’s event, was a very successful drop-in Sunday session at the Hall with a veteran car display by Griffith Veteran Car Club. IMAGE: Haidee and Josh Verlin and Dan and Lindy Walters embrace the style of the Roaring 20s at the centenary celebration for the Shire Hall.
