Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) has urged residents to play ahead this holiday season, especially with many GPs closed or operating under reduced hours.

MPHN’s Wagga GP After Hours Service Practice Manager, Toni Preuss said it was a good idea to check if your scripts needed to be renewed before the holiday period.

“While many of us are focusing on preparing for holidays and social gatherings, it’s important to look after your health needs,” Ms Preuss said.

“Having current scripts for your regular medications will ensure you don’t run out over the holidays and need to see a GP, which can be especially challenging if you’re travelling.

“If you have a pressing health issue you’ve been meaning to see your GP, dentist or allied health clinician about, it’s better to book an appointment now, rather than waiting until it becomes urgent, especially during the festive period when medical professionals may be less available.”

If you face difficulty securing a GP appointment during the holidays, there are several alternatives.

A free government-funded 24-hour health service, healthdirect is available by calling 1800 022 222 or by visiting healthdirect.gov.au.

MPHN’s GP telehealth after-hours service, delivered by HealthAccess, serves communities in Griffith and surrounding Murrumbidgee and Carrathool shires, Leeton Shire, Finley, Berrigan, Deniliquin, and surrounding Berrigan and Edward River shires.

Contact HealthAccess at 1800 272 767 or find them at www.mphn.org.au/health-access.

MPHN’s Wagga GP After Hours Service is available by calling 6931 0900 or look them up at www.mphn.org.au/after-hours.

People are advised to go to the nearest medical facility or hospital in cases of serious illness.

Ms Preuss suggested noting down the above contact numbers and placing them on yuor friends for easy access if needed.

“No one plans on falling ill during the holidays, but being prepared will help you stay calmer if it happens,” she said.
