Proposed Young Street Subdivision Street Names Reflect Darlington Point’s Rich History And Culture
Darlington Point residents are invited to have their say on the two proposed names for the Young Street subdivision by 5 pm on Thursday, August 8.
The upcoming residential subdivision on Young Street in Darlington Point is set to honour the town’s deep historical and cultural roots with proposed street names that celebrate local identities and Indigenous heritage.
Helena Parade - named after Helena Pugh, a revered figure in Darlington Point’s history. Helena Pugh (1919 - 2013) dedicated her life as a bush nurse, providing essential healthcare services across NSW, including Darlington Point. Her contributions extended beyond healthcare as she played a pivotal role in community activities such as the Red Cross, balls, concerts and plays.
Edwards Street - named after the Wiradjuri totem “Gugaa”, which symbolises the goanna and serves as a unifying emblem for the Wiradjuri Nation. This totem holds cultural significance, connecting all people, past and present, of Wiradjuri Land.
Murrumbidgee Council Mayor, Ruth McRae said the proposed street names reflected their commitment to honouring both the individuals who shaped the community and the Indigenous heritage of the land.
Mayor McRae said Council encouraged community feedback on the choices as they strove to celebrate and preserve Darlington Point’s rich history.
