Qantas will launch new direct flights between Griffith and Sydney on Monday March 1. The flights will operate daily with the airline’s 50-seat turboprop Q300 aircraft with upgraded cabin interiors, adding more than 700 seats on the route each week.
Qantas are offering fares from $132 one-way, thus keeping their pricing competitive with other carriers.
“We’re also pleased to be able to offer Riverina residents more choice and competitive fares on a route which has been a monopoly for years,” QantasLink CEO John Gissing said.
Before COVID-19, more than 11 million Australians travelled overseas each year, so these flights will help convert some of these international trips into domestic holidays instead. Mayor Dal Broi said, “Having this service will add more options to travellers. We have been fortunate that since borders opened our local tourism has picked up due to the push for more regional travel.”
QantasLink CEO John Gissing said “As the national carrier, we have an important role to play in driving tourism and supporting the industry’s recovery.”
Following the Northern Beaches outbreak in December 2020 and its impact on travel restrictions and demand, the launch of the Sydney to Griffith services were delayed one month from February 1 to March 1.
Qantas offers a premium service, including complimentary food and drinks, baggage and lounge access before they fly out. Qantas also recently announced a suite of customer initiatives, including a boost to flexibility allowing unlimited flight changes until at least January 2022 so that customers can book with confidence.
Mayor Dal Broi is confident that the region can sustain the service providing the right scheduling and the service is supported by the community.
