The South Sydney Rabbitohs wowed a crowd of up to 2,500 at Solar Mad Stadium, with a convincing win against the Darlington Point Coleambally Group 20 side.

Getting into Griffith on Friday, players visited schools to meet the children and also met with fans at a Sportsman’s night at Griffith Leagues Club.

The main event on Saturday featured three games. The first game kicked off at 3:30pm with the women’s Group 20 up against Group 17. Group 17 took the victory.

Game two was the ‘Roger Penrith Memorial Game’, which kicked off at 5pm between the Group 20 Indigenous side and the Group 20 Barbarians. Both sides played a strong game with the match ending in a 26 all draw.

The much anticipated match up between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Darlington Point Coleambally Group 20 was dominated by the Rabbitohs from early on, leading them to a convincing 58-0 victory.

“Trial games give the young players an opportunity to play. Some of the players haven’t been able to play for up to eighteen months due to Covid,” said Rabbitohs Chief Operating Officer Brock Schaefer.

“It also gives players an opportunity to give back to communities, promoting the league and hopefully inspiring young players that if they work hard one day they might just make it.”

Steve Hogan from the Darlington Point Coleambally club said it was a great way to start off the season, especially with the wider community involved.

“The day was an awesome way to relaunch football after over a year off due to Covid, days like these help unite the community and bring players together, giving them the opportunity to put their skills to the test,” Mr Hogan said.

“Game three was a great match with the Group 20 team working a strong defense, making the Rabbitohs players work hard for their victory.”
