Today, Friday, June 3 is Crazysocks4docs Day - a day to recognise and acknowledge mental health issues faced by our doctors.

The pandemic has driven cases of mental health issues up across the entire population, including our doctors.

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network has encouraged people in the region to don their craziest socks to help to raise awareness and support our doctors through trying times.

Acting MPHN CEO, Narelle Mills said Crazysocks4docs Day was about recognising and acknowledging the mental health issues among doctors in our community and continuing to support them.

“We know the mental and physical toil on medical doctors increased during the COVID-19 pandemic and Crazysocs4docs Day is a fitting day reminder for local GPs to check in with colleagues and start a discussion on mental health issues,” Ms Mills said.

“A key focus of MPHN is to support the health and wellbeing of general practitioners and other primary healthcare professionals. “We encourage community members to take the opportunity to ask their GP how they are going and remind them to look after themselves.”

It is important for all health professionals to practise self-care by keeping in tune with their core selves and taking time out for themselves.

Listening to the health issues of their patients on a daily basis can also impact a doctor’s own mental and emotional health.

Remind your doctor that they must take their own advice and seek support and help when they are feeling mentally and emotionally spent.

Call Accessline on 1800 800 944, Lifeline on 131 114 or dial 000 if you, or someone you know, is experiencing a mental health emergency.
