Residents are urged to limit their water usage while the Griffith Water Treatment Plant undergoes necessary repairs.

Residents are urged to minimise their water usage from August 1 while works are carried out on the Griffith Water Treatment Plant (GWTP).

Griffith City Council accepted a tender from Duratec Limited to carry out remediation works at the GWTP.

Director of Utilities, Mr Graham Gordon said the remediation works were expected to commence on the 35-year-old structure in early August.

“The scope of the works will require Council to turn off the Water Treatment Plant at various stages which is used for supplying drinking water to the Griffith community,” Mr Gordon said.

“During this time the only drinking water available will be from the reservoirs on Scenic Hill to supply the city while the treatment plan is off.

“This supply is limited and we, therefore, request the community to reduce their water consumption.

“This is essential to be able to carry out the repairs and concrete remediation at the GWTP.”

Residents and businesses are asked to reduce water consumption from August 1 through to late September.

Simple measures for conserving water include:

  • Turning off garden watering systems;
  • Not hosing down pathways and driveways;
  • Limiting shower times to three minutes;
  • Using less water to wash the car;
  • Turning off the tap when shaving or brushing your teeth;
  • Using the dishwasher only when it is full; and
  • Checking taps for leaks.

Mr Gordon said that in addition to saving water where possible, residents and business operators may notice a reduction in water pressure throughout the duration of the project.

“We understand that this can cause frustration, but Council will do everything possible to minimise disruptions,” Mr Gordon said.

Residents will be updated as work progresses.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Curran said it was vital the community worked toward reducing water consumption as much as possible during the remediation works.

“The works being undertaken are essential and Council understands that while it is not ideal to have to get residents and businesses to reduce water usage, it is important that the works are carried out and that there is enough drinking water for the community during this time,” he said.
