Revitalised Dave Taylor Park Officially Open
Community members get familiar with the new Griffin Green Youth and Community Park, formerly known as Dave Taylor Park, which officially opened yesterday, Thursday, October 31.
It has taken some time and considerable effort, but old Dave Taylor Park has been transformed into the Griffin Green Youth and Community Park, officially opened on Thursday, October 31.
No name-only-transformation, this ambitious redevelopment was accomplished through a partnership between Griffith City Council and Argyle Housing.
The 4,798sqm of formerly vacant land is now an inclusive haven for the community, with an emphasis on youth connectivity, opportunity and engagement.
An enriched landscape is designed to foster connection and recreation among community members.
It features a green common, children’s playground, gym amenities and a yarning circle celebrating traditional storytelling.
A standout addition to the park is the unique basketball court, co-developed with the Griffith Aboriginal Land Council and adorned with culturally significant art by local Aboriginal artist Karissa Undy.
The court symbolises community involvement, as local residents joined together to leave their handprints, fostering a shared sense of ownership.
A community hub will be situated adjacent to the park, with the opening planned for some time between December 2024 and January 2025.
The aim is for the hub to host a variety of workshops tailored to enhance young people’s skills, confidence and independence.
The park is home to vibrant gardens, established in collaboration with the Botanic Gardens of Sydney’s Community Greening program.
Griffith City Council Mayor Doug Curran said the vibrant transformation represented the heart of community spirit and innovation.
“We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this milestone, which enriches Griffith’s quality of life and fortifies our communal bonds for years ahead.”
Funding of $1.48 million from the NSW Government’s “Our Region, Our Voice” Regional Youth Investment Program made the project possible.
Argyle Housing CEO Carolyn Doherty said reflecting on the incredible journey, Griffin Green David Taylor Park beautifully showcased their dedication to uplifting regional youth.
“By fostering creativity, collaboration and connectivity, we nurture a thriving community where every voice is heard and every potential is realised,” Ms Doherty said.
The Griffin Green Youth and Community Park stands for inclusivity and cultural celebration, reinforcing the essence of community while paving the way for a thriving, connected future.
