Griffith RFS hosted a three-day Incident Management Exercise last week.

The NSW Rural Fire Service conducted an Incident Management Exercise last week at the MIA Fire Control Centre in Griffith.

The aim of the exercise was to assess candidates in functional rules during the management of a bush fire incident which was escalating towards classification as a Class 3 bushfire.

It was designed to develop and maintain the incident management skills of personnel and gather evidence toward the assessment of incident management and other qualifications.

MIA District Manager Superintendent Scott Connor said it had been a great opportunity to test and evaluate the incident control centre including layout, equipment and systems prior to the upcoming fire season.

The Incident Management Exercise takes place in a realistic operational environment, running in real time and incorporating authentic situations, and requires participant to perform the functions of their roles.

“Several of the local staff joined others from across the state including as far away as Brewarrina and Sydney, for this valuable exercise,” Superintendent Connor said.

The roles for which candidates were assessed included:

  • Incident Controller;

  • Deputy Incident Controller;

  • Public Information Officer;

  • Intelligence Officer;

  • Planning Officer;

  • Operations Officer;

  • Logistics Officer; and

  • Bush Fire Impact Assessment teams.

The Incident Management Exercise ran over three days and would not have been possible without the support of the Volunteers from the MIA, Riverina, Bland, Temora and Southern Border districts.
