Robert Cappello was honoured as Griffith’s Citizen of the Year at last week’s Australia Day ceremony.

Mr Cappello received the accolade for his work as Griffith Post School Options (GPSO) board Chairman. His dedication over the past 10 years has resulted in the facility’s growth and development, improving the lives of local people with disabilities.

Family, friends and self-motivation to achieve a great future for GPSO are inspirations for Robert.

“I have a daughter with Downs Syndrome, and a few friends’ children that have varying disabilities,” Mr Cappello said.

He is also Managing Director of Riverina Lift Trucks Ltd (www.rlt.com.au) and Rapid Group Ltd (https://rapidclean.com.au). Being involved commercially in Griffith of-fers further incentive and opportunity to give back to his clients and community.

“Owning the businesses gives you the ability to be flexible with spending time with a community centre like GPSO, plus gives you the experience and knowledge to run a business the size of GPSO,” he said.

Mr Cappello said he enjoys his work with GPSO, never thinking it would be honoured like this.

“The award is something I would never have imagined I would receive. The work I do with GPSO, I do because I enjoy doing it,” he said.

“In joining GPSO many years ago, the path to where we are today commenced.”

The organisation has grown from approx eight clients 10 years ago to approximately 160 today, employing at least 55 full time and casual staff; with “a great management team led by Roy Catanzariti”.

By assisting individuals with a disability to achieve their full potential, GPSO enables each person to reach their standard of quality of life as an valued and independent person. It offers Transition To Work, Community Participation, Supported Living Fund and Active Ageing and respite services.
