Shakiya Murray shows good form on the bowling green at one of her local competitions.

Griffith’s very own 14-year-old Shakiya Murray is one of just 18 girls from across the State selected as part of the NSW 2023 Junior Representative and Development Squad for lawn bowls.

It is early days, so Shakiya won’t learn if and when she will meet the rest of the squad to train and play together prior to competing.

Until then it is all about training and conditioning.

“I have to train,” Shakiya said.

“I have to do at least one drill each week, but I try to do two or three.

“I have to do one hour of physical activity outside of bowling each week.

“I have to play my local competitions and I have to fill out a form and send it in.”

The form that Shakiya has to complete informs the organising committee of her progress and allows them to get a clear picture of how each member of the squad is doing.

Shakiya started playing lawn bowls with her family.

“It’s a great way to meet people,” Shakiya said.

“I like the social part of it.

“I like that you have to focus.”

Shakiya said she was shocked to learn that she had been selected for the squad because places like Griffith didn’t often get the same status or opportunities as other larger communities.

While her mother, Sharon, doesn’t play the sport she is a keen Shakiya supporter.

“I was pretty excited for her,” Sharon said.

“Hopefully it will get other young people playing the game.”

Shakiya said she has also travelled with her sport, accompanied by her parents.
