Super-sized Unveiling of Griffith Regional Sports Complex Planned
A huge open day is planned for Griffith Regional Sports Complex on Saturday, October 29.
Griffith will welcome a lineup of sporting starts to celebrate the opening of the newly constructed Griffith Regional Sports Complex at Westend, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Regional Sport Events Fund program.
The funding was secured to hold a free super-sized come and try day on Saturday, October 29, to open the new complex.
The day will include visits from sporting stars from Giants Netball, Sydney Kings & Sydney Flames Basketball, Kookaburras and Hockeyroos Hockey as well as high-profile track and field athletes.
The whole community is invited to meet the elite athletes and participate in the free coaching clinics on the day.
Volunteers from Griffith Basketball Association, Griffith Hockey Association, Griffith Netball Association and Little Athletics Griffith will be on-hand, providing a range of fun activities, information and advice on their local competitions.
Mayor Councillor Doug Curran said the open day was an excellent opportunity for the local community and visitors alike to explore the city’s new state-of-the-art sporting facility and try their hand at a new sport.
“The work being undertaken at Westen will see the area become a state-of-the-art sporting arena, allowing for increased participation from local sporting groups, schools and organisations, as well as providing opportunities to host major local and regional sporting events and carnivals,” Councillor Curran said.
“I would like to invite the community to save the date for October 29 and come along to see what the Precinct will offer - try out some of the sports on offer, meet sporting heroes, and take home some goodies.
“This will be a great opportunity to see and try first hand some of the sports that will be an offer, have a chat to representatives from Griffith Basketball Association, Griffith Hockey Association, Griffith Netball Association, and Griffith Little Athletics.
“It will be a fun day and not one you will want to miss.”
The Regional Sport Events Funding program supported by the Australia Sports Commission will invest $1.9 million to support Local Government Councils in regional and remote Australia to host sporting events.
The program aims to reinvigorate local economies following the impact of COVID-19, engage communities and encourage greater visitation to regional Australia.
The Griffith Regional Sports Complex is a $31.9 million project with funding of $4.5 million from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, $11 million from the NSW Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund and Regional Sport Facility Fund, and $16.4 million from Griffith City Council.
