While a cute little puppy or kitten may be at the top of many a Christmas wish list, the grim reality is that the Griffith Pound and Rehoming Centre typically sees a spike in people looking to surrender animals in the weeks following Christmas.
So, first and foremost, before purchasing a pet as a gift, make very certain that the person who is going to be responsible for feeding and caring for the animal is willing and able to do so.
Once that is settled you might consider adopting rather than buying an animal and don’t forget to match the the breed of animal to the lifestyle of the recipient.
Griffith City Council has joined with the NSW Government to encourage locals considering the addition of a furry member of the family to consider adopting.
Planning and Environment Manager for Griffity City Council, Carel Potgieter said for those who had done their research, adopting a pet was a great way to help a dog or cat find a new home.
“We know at Christmastime people often welcome a new pet into their families or give a cat or dog as a gift to a loved one,” Mr Potgieter said.
“Therefore, we are asking prospective local pet owners to visit the Griffith Pound and Rehoming Centre.
“We have plenty of cats and dogs seeking a second chance to find their forever families.
“Adopting not shopping for a pet has the added benefit of reducing the burden on our Griffith Pound and Rehoming Centre and affiliated Rescue Groups.
“Along with the ‘adopt not shop’ message, pet owners are reminded of the three easy steps of responsible pet ownership - microchipping, desexing and registering their pet.
“Giving an animal a second chance at a forever home is one of the most wonderful and rewarding things someone can do, but please make sure you research before adding a new pet to your family.
Please remember, pets are for life, not just for Christmas.”
