Thunderstorms can be risky for asthma sufferers during spring.

A thunderstorm asthma alert has been issued for the Murrumbidgee Local Health District from today, Friday, October 18 for the weekend.

Current high pollen counts and predicted thunderstorms can increase the risk of asthma.

People who know they have asthma are advised to carry their asthma puffer with them at all times and to try to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed during the storm period.

It is also important to be aware that thunderstorm asthma can also affect people who have not had asthma before.

If you have breathing difficulties call 000 or go to the hospital emergency department.

You can go to https://science-health.csu.edu.au/asthma/thunderstorm-asthma to register for an SMS or email alert when pollen counts are high and thunderstorms are predicted or you can text the word “Asthma” to 0417 115 876.

People can also monitor thunderstorm activity at www.bom.gov.au
