Independent Member for Murray, Helen Dalton has welcomed the State Government’s $1.6 million funding for improvements to rural and regional bus stops in the electorate.
Griffith Council will receive $62,500 for two new bus shelters and five upgrades to existing shelters.
Leeton Council will receive $16,500 to build a new shelter at Corbie Hill.
Murrumbidgee Council will benefit from $20,000 to build a new shelter at Darlington Point.
Ms Dalton said the three Councils in the electorate sharing in the funding would now be able to improve on critical infrastructure in their townships.
“It’s great to see rural communities receive improvements to public transport with improved curb side access, security lighting, improved timetable boards and new bus stop seating,” Ms Dalton said.
“I’m pleased that older residents in rural communities and those with disabilities and mobility issues will be able to get to their destinations with more ease, comfort and safety and accessibility.
“The difference this will make to residents who rely on public transport will be huge and it’s great to see the government investing in the regions.”
The funding comes as part of the Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Scheme which will see the roll out of 149 new regional bus stop improvement programs.
Bus stops owned and maintained by 27 councils will be able to install:
- Tactile ground surface indicators;
- Security lighting;
- Improved kerbside access;
- Better timetable boards; and
- New bus stop seating.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison said the investment in regional bus stops and shelters would help make it easier for people with disabilities and mobility issues to get to work, school, the shops, health care and social opportunities.
“Senior citizens, parents using prams and the community at large will also benefit from the upgrades this funding is delivering,” Ms Aitchison said.
“I want to thank all the councils who applied for funding and share our passion for improved public transport infrastructure in regional NSW.”
