What do you think you could do with your recyclables or pre-loved items you no longer want?

Care to find out?

Murrumbidgee Council Mayor, Ruth McRae has invited all schools, community groups and individuals to take up the challenge to showcase reused and recycle materials with the Waste to Art Competition.

Mayor McRae said Waste to Art was an innovative way of giving new life to materials that would otherwise have been thrown away, recycled or considered useless.

“It’s a very inclusive competition that absolutely any age can enter,” Mayor McRae said.

“We have categories for preschool/primary school, high school/community and an open category for professional artists.

“This year’s theme of “Love your own backyard” can either be used to describe the source of the artwork’s materials or to depict a scene from a backyard.

“The term “backyard” loosely describes our environment, whether it be our own yard, the river, the park and so on.

“We are very excited to see the entries that come in because it really is quite extraordinary how creative people are.”

An exhibition, will be held in each town of the Council to showcase the works.

The gala opening night will be held at Colemabally on June 21, with everyone welcome.

Waste to Art coincides with the Council-wide introduction of organic waste collection and a recycling service for Jerilderie from July.

Many materials can be used - soft plastics, tin cans, bottle tops, plastic bags, parts from rusty farm machinery, scrap metal, bread tags - the options are limitless.

Instead of ending up in landfill, these waste materials could be turend into fantastic works of art.

Coleambally artist, Kerri Weymouth will join with Julie Bellato to offer Eco Art Workshopos throughout April and May, with artwork from the workshops able to be entered into the competition.

Residents from outside the Murrumbidgee Council area are welcome to enter the competition, but the prize money will only be available to residents of the Murrumbidgee Council area.

Entries close at 12 noon on Friday, June 16.
