Dear Editor

With three very wet years behind us and predictions of drought conditions ahead, now is the time to pause and consider how the Lachlan water-sharing plan region fared in water compliance during the last financial year.

The Natural Resources Access Regulator (NRAR) has just released its annual progress report and for the first time this year, it contains regional water compliance snapshots of the whole of NSW.

These will not only allow water users to assess their own region’s compliance with the water laws but also to compare it with the rest of NSW.

Our work in your region from July 2022 to June 2023 confirmed that for the Lachlan, there is a lot to celebrate.

During this period, 91 per cent of completed investigations in this region did not require further action from NRAR.

We can only thank the majority of law-abiding water users for that.

However, the data also means that there were 7 times when NRAR issued a fine or took some other enforcement action.

In a perfect world, that number would be zero.

You can read about common types of offences in your region and te actions we took, in the report on the Natural Resources Access Regulator website.

The progress report is our commitment to being transparent about what’s been achieved in the last 12 months and what we have planned for the next 12 months and how we make sure everyone gets their fair share of water resources - communities, the environment and industry.
